Can a home office be both pretty and functional? Absolutely! Creating the ideal workspace may take a little extra planning, but if you follow these simple tips, your office space CAN and WILL be as fabulous as YOU make it!
1. Use what you already have. Look around your house for items you may already have. Often times you will find a desk, desk accessories, or a chair in your attic or basement. Perhaps there is an old desk that needs a coat of paint or a table that can be brought back to life with marbled contact paper? Get creative with paperclip caddies and pencil/pen holders.
2. Enjoy your surroundings. Don't set up your home office in a dingy corner of the basement, unless that is the only space available. Look for an empty corner of a bedroom or family room where there is plenty of natural light.
When you find the perfect place in your home, hang paintings or photography on the walls, or place one or two frames on your desk of whatever makes you happy. Family photos or a dreamy travel destination will remind you of why you are working so hard.
4. Storage. Space can be a precious comodity. Utilize smart and stylish cubbies, cabinets, and shelving that add sophisticated detail to your office decor and provide storage solutions that help you stay organized and keep clutter at bay. Shop flea markets and thrift stores for shelving and cubbies. Check clearance sales at TJMaxx and Homegoods stores for storage cubbies and other office supplies.
5. Furniture. An adjustable and comfortable chair that supports your back is important for both your health and productivity. You will want to consider whether you want arm rests, 360 degree swivel capability, and the overall comfort of the seat material itself. A fiberglass chair will probably not provide the comfort you need for an 8-hour day.
That's it! Creating a functional workspace can be fun, and best of all, you don't have to break the bank to do it!
xoxo,
Great tips! I love the color scheme you have for your office and the desk.
ReplyDeleteHi Stephanie! I'm obsessed with dusty pink and gold accents. I have the same color scheme in my family room during spring & summer months. My hubby hates it! lol :)

These are great tips! Sadly my home office is the kitchen table! I do position myself to face the beauty of the outdoors and I have added a bird feeder to help distract, er focus me!
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer, Your "office" sounds beautiful and tranquil. As long as it works for you, that's all that matters. (I love watching the birds, too!)

I love your tips. I need more lighting. I’m using what I have but I would love a wrap around desk.
ReplyDeleteHi Terri, I find the older I get, the more light I need. And yes, the wrap around desks are soooo nice! :)

I agree, less is more especially in an office! I love my current office space but it could use a little makeover.
ReplyDeleteHi Ricci, I am always fussing with the decor in my office. It drives hubby crazy, so I have to do it even more! :)

I haven't used a desk in forever. Sitting in a chair for hours upon hours makes me hurt 10x more than sittng on the couch or in bed. My husband has an awesome setup. He scored one of the high end standing desks for $150 bucks. Im talking about the ones that normally retail over $1,000. If I could sit at a desk, I would opt for teal accessories and have a few family photos on the wall.
ReplyDeleteYes, the standing desks sound so cool and I'm sure they increase his productivity, too.

My biggest problem is having to go overboard with everything leaving it crowded. I need to take your tip and do more with less.
ReplyDeleteIt is the little things that add up! I love these tips.
ReplyDeleteLighting I believe is a weakness for my office. We need it so much. The gold accents are always a great idea.
ReplyDeleteExcellent tips. We moved into a new home last October. While I can't believe we have already been here almost six months, I also love how we took everything we already owned and reconfigured in our new space. My poor office still needs a bit of work and this is definitely inspiring!
