It’s easy to
get carried away with dress styles on prom and go for the high hems and daring
cut outs but, if it’s at the expense of you getting kicked out of the dance,
it’s not worth it.
Celebrities
are partly to blame for this as every year, it just seems like the red carpet
dresses are becoming more and more edgier; and when we say edgier, we mean more
skin. Designers are getting creative in placing cut outs at the most unexpected
places.
But prom
isn’t Hollywood. And going to your prom in a dress that may be acceptable on
the red carpet might not go well with your school’s superiors. You want to make
sure that you not only look good for prom; you also want to wear something that
abides with the school’s dress codes.
To help you
are some tips on picking a prom dress
making sure it is keeping with the school prom dress code:
1. Do
not ignore the dress code
You
can’t ignore the dress code. Something as simple as a high slit on your dress
could mean you missing out the most important night of your high school life.
Some girls will still forego the rules and pick a dress to their liking hoping
that simple shawl will cover it all up. You can’t risk faking it as certain
schools will make sure you abide with the dress code and send you home if they
see anything wrong with the dress.
So
to be on the extremely safe side, go over your school’s prom dress code and be
aware of what’s and what is not allowed.
2. Offset
a revealing part with another covered part
So
let’s say you’re aiming for backless from Peachesboutique.com
make sure that it has a longer train so as to balance out the skin that you’re
revealing. Or if you’re wearing a shorter dress, the top has to be covered. It
can be a challenge but it’s a nice compromise that will keep you safe from the
administrators.
3. Understand
the reason behind the rules
Schools
only mean the best when they impose dress codes, not because they want to make
the students’ lives harder. Understand where the school is coming from when
they try to impose strict rules against open back cut outs and tummy-revealing
dresses.
Remember
that the main aim of prom is to practice refinement. So it’s not exactly
refined when you wear a two-piece dress that looks like it was meant for a
summer party.
4. Think
elegance and grace
When
picking a prom dress, think Audrey Hepburn or Olivia Palermo. What would they
wear? You don’t exactly have to copy these style icons as you have your own
unique style too but you can take inspiration from them as they prove that you
too can look beautiful without having to show a lot of skin.
5. Be
creative
Just
because your choices are limited to non-revealing dresses, it doesn’t mean you
can’t look good on prom night. There’s still a wide array of styles to choose
from. A good example of a good selection is the prom dress designs in Chicago dress superstore, Peaches Boutique.
You can still find a dress that will compliment your figure and make you look
stunning for prom night.
In Conclusion
If you go to a school where it’s known to have strict prom dress codes, it pays to
do your shopping early. This way, you have enough time to pick a dress that
doesn’t go against the rules but also allow you to look good on this most
special night.

Good suggestions. I think offsetting a revealing part of the body with a covered part is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI think it is great advice and keeps one from overexposure.

Great tips for shopping for prom dresses!! I used these same guidelines when I was shopping for mine in high school. I think this holds true for formal wear for business events as well as prom.
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer! I agree. You could apply some of these tips for business events too!

These are all such great points for help girls select a dress. With life there will always be options to make the wrong choice, but I think with what you have laid out you are giving the young girls a great way to find the right dress. Sticking with the dress code set in place is key! The dresses sure have changed since I went to prom! #old
ReplyDeleteHi Cindy! I agree the dresses have changed so much over the years. Shorter hemlines and plunging necklines were pushing the envelope back then, but now it's showing the midriff too. I'm hoping young girls will take the advice above.
DeleteGreat tips! The purpose of prom originally was to give young people their first proper event at which to practice their manners and social skills. My prom was great but it had very little to do with the original purpose of prom!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about some of these prom dresses now. I live out in the country and my cell phone gets more coverage than these dresses do! I don't know if it is celebrities or what, but ladies need to realize what they are risking some of these outfits. I wouldn't have traded my prom night for anything.
ReplyDeleteYup, I'm hoping girls will consider classy over trashy. The dresses are so gorgeous today, they can really look elegant!
DeleteI'm glad you had a great time at prom and have wonderful memories.
Oh my...excellent read! I am so glad I had boys :)
ReplyDeleteHa! Ha! Boys are easy when it comes to prom! :)
DeleteThanks for visiting, Cuz!
Great suggestions. The dresses seem to get shorter as I get older! lOL I remember prom being about finding the perfect long ball gown, not anymore. Wonder what the style will be when my 3 year old is ready for prom?
ReplyDeleteI was happy my daughter went with a classic Cinderella gown last year. Some of the girls look way too mature for their ages.
DeleteHopefully the style will be ball gowns again when your daughter goes to prom! :)

Wow! Super helpful post. --But haha. I agree with everyone above - that dresses just seem to be getting shorter! I feel like I sound old just hearing these words come out.
